US President Donald Trump wants experts to work on a modernized version of the New START nuclear weapons treaty as the U.S.-Russia agreement expires this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Thursday (February 5). Leavitt added that there is no temporary agreement to maintain the terms of the pact. Trump on Thursday rejected an offer from his Russian counterpart to voluntarily extend the caps on strategic nuclear weapons deployments after the treaty that held them in check for more than two decades expired.
